Stephen joined the firm in August 2006 as head of our Welfare Benefits and Community Care department, having worked previously as a LSC supervisor at the CAB. Stephen was called to the Bar of the Inner Temple in 2003 and has represented clients in the Social Security Appeal Tribunal and on appeal to the Commissioners. He has also acted for clients in the Employment Tribunal in breach of contract and unfair dismissal matters. He was attracted to the firm by what he calls our "historic commitment to the disadvantaged in society and to the firm's strong reputation in ensuring that such clients are able to exercise fully the legal rights available to them. It is just a pity that we probably only ever see the tip of a very large iceberg".
It is for these reasons that Stephen is very keen to promote and expand our Community Care work as the firm remains one of the very few providers offering a comprehensive service-right up to Judicial Review proceedings-in this dynamic and crucial area of social welfare law. And as a Liverpudlian living in the south he has raw personal experience of what discrimination really feels like!
In his spare time Stephen enjoys learning foreign languages (he is fluent in French and German and has conversational competence in Spanish) and listening to opera, preferably German.
